In crystal tradition, the left hand is the receiving side, for stones that invite love, abundance or calm, and the right hand is the protective side, for stones such as black tourmaline. Each crystal guide gives its traditional wrist; see also which wrist to wear a crystal bracelet on.

Yes. Many people combine stones, and clear quartz is traditionally said to amplify the stones it is paired with. Rose quartz with moonstone is a classic pairing for love.

They are two different minerals that share the name jade. Jadeite, 翡翠, is a pyroxene of about 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale, found mainly in Myanmar; nephrite is an amphibole of about 6–6.5 and exceptionally tough, and includes Hetian jade from Xinjiang.

Not reliably at home: the tap, cold-touch and scratch tests can all be fooled. Ask the seller in writing whether a piece is natural, untreated Type A jade, and for a significant purchase get a report from an independent gemmological laboratory. Our jade buying guide explains more.

In the Five Elements tradition, jade colours are matched to each sign’s element — for example green, red or purple for the fire signs, Snake and Horse. Our Jade & Zodiac guide covers all twelve signs.

In Chinese folklore, jade that breaks without cause is said to have taken a blow meant for its wearer. Tradition says to wrap the pieces in red cloth and bury them rather than repairing the piece and wearing it again.

A silver polishing cloth lifts light tarnish in seconds. For more, wash plain silver in lukewarm water with a drop of mild dishwashing liquid, brush gently with a soft toothbrush, rinse and dry well. Avoid toothpaste, and never soak pieces set with stones. See our silver care guide.

Keep each piece in its own airtight bag with an anti-tarnish strip or a sachet of silica gel, in a drawer rather than the bathroom. Keep silver away from rubber bands, which contain sulphur.

It is best to take it off. Water, soap and chlorine are hard on elastic and on some stones, and in Singapore’s humidity bracelet elastic lasts longer when it is kept dry. Keep crystals out of long, direct sunlight too, as some colours can fade.
