What is rose quartz?
Rose quartz is the pink variety of quartz, one of the most abundant minerals on earth. Unlike clear quartz, it rarely grows as pointed crystals; it forms in large, cloudy masses, which is why it is usually cut into smooth beads, tumbled stones and cabochons rather than faceted gems. Its colour comes from microscopic fibres trapped inside the quartz as it formed, and that same fine texture gives good rose quartz its soft, milky glow.
Most rose quartz on the market today comes from Brazil and Madagascar, where the deepest pinks are found. The colour ranges from barely-there blush to a clear rose; a slightly misty stone is natural and a sign that it has not been dyed.
