What is larvikite?

Larvikite is not a single mineral but an igneous rock — a type of monzonite — named after the town of Larvik in southern Norway, where it is still quarried. It formed deep underground from slowly cooling magma, which gave its feldspar crystals time to grow large. Those feldspars are the source of its beauty: tilt a polished piece and they flash silvery blue, a play of light known as schiller, similar to the labradorescence of labradorite.

You may have seen larvikite without knowing it. Polished slabs are widely used for shopfronts, worktops and memorials, often sold as “Blue Pearl” granite. In jewellery it is cut into smooth beads that look almost black until they catch the light. At about 6 on the Mohs scale, it is durable enough for daily wear.

Larvikite meaning

Larvikite is often called “black moonstone”, and its Chinese name, 黑月光 (hēi yuè guāng), means “black moonlight”. It is not true moonstone, but the nickname suits its hidden glow. In crystal tradition it is a protective, grounding stone, believed to repel negative energy and to increase patience — helping you pause and respond rather than react.

Crystal lore also describes it as a stone that connects you with the earth, drawing scattered thoughts back down to solid ground, and it is said to calm a restless, worried mind. Its flashes of light against a dark background are often read as a symbol of insight in difficult times. It is linked with the root chakra, the centre associated with stability and belonging. Because it looks so understated — a smooth dark bead until the light catches it — many people choose larvikite as their first protective stone.

How to wear larvikite

Wear larvikite on your right hand for grounding. Caring for larvikite

At about 6 on the Mohs scale, larvikite is hard-wearing, but its feldspar crystals have natural cleavage planes and can chip along them if knocked sharply.

• Store it separately from harder stones such as quartz, which can scratch its polish.
• Clean with a soft, damp cloth, then dry; avoid harsh chemicals and ultrasonic cleaners.
• Take bracelets off for swimming, showers and the gym, and restring when the elastic loosens in Singapore’s humidity.
