What is a Fire Horse year?
The Chinese calendar names each year with a pair of characters from a sixty-year cycle: one of ten Heavenly Stems, which carry an element, and one of twelve Earthly Branches, the zodiac animals. 2026 is 丙午 (bǐng wǔ). Bing is yang fire, and Wu is the Horse, whose own element is also fire, so this is a doubly fiery year. The last Fire Horse year was 1966.
The zodiac year began at Chinese New Year, on 17 February 2026, not on 1 January — so if you were born in January or February, before the new year began, check which animal is yours. Tai Sui: why the Rat and the Horse take extra care
In Chinese astrology, Tai Sui 太岁 is the celestial general who presides over each year, and signs in a difficult relationship with the year’s ruler are traditionally advised to go gently. In 2026 two signs stand out:
- The Horse is in its Ben Ming Nian 本命年, its own zodiac year, and is said to be “offending the Tai Sui”. Tradition treats one’s own year less as a lucky streak than as a time of scrutiny, self-reflection and challenge.
- The Rat sits opposite the Horse on the zodiac wheel and faces a “clash” with the Tai Sui, which tends to bring turbulence and change: not necessarily bad, but tiring.
Familiar customs for such years include wearing a touch of red and visiting a temple early in the year to pay respects to the Tai Sui. How to wear your 2026 crystal
In crystal tradition, stones chosen to attract or strengthen — garnet, amethyst, moonstone and citrine among them — are worn on the left hand, the receiving side. Tiger’s eye can go either way: left for confidence, right for protection. Aquamarine is traditionally worn as a necklace, close to the throat.
